More Coding

Mr. Maltais was back this afternoon to do some coding with us. The kids turned their Microbits into thermometers and then went around the school to check the temperatures in different spots. It was awesome. What a fun way to kick off a new science unit. Next week will be full of science, science, science. We will be exploring Hot and Cold Temperatures and doing more experimenting and playing with Magnets.
In LA we are working on 2 common problems that I see in their writing, Bossy R problems and ed problems.
In Math we will continue working on numbers to 100. I am giving the kids many experiences working with numbers to build their number sense.
Next week will be a 4 day week. Friday is a PD day.
Check out the Jan folder for some skating photos.

Stay Warm!

I hope everyone out there has been staying safe and warm. For those families who have chosen to stay at home on these cold, cold days, I understand. For those of you who have braved the cold, thanks for getting them here! We haven't started any new curriculum. We have reviewed, practiced and played lots. It's been a lot of fun. We even had some pizza fairies show up at lunchtime today delivering cheese pizza for all.

I look look forward to temperatures going up and to seeing everyone back again soon! Take care!

Stay Warm!

We had a great first week back to school after the holidays. The kids worked really hard and got right back into the swing of things in the classroom. I am very impressed with them. They have been working hard.

Here are a few things we've been working on:

  • spelling/word work Week 14
  • reading comprehension activities
  • journal writing
  • sentence building/grammar activities
  • numbers to 100, greater than/less than, 10 more/10 less, skip counting, odd/even
  • magnetism
  • Zones of Regulation - feelings
  • dance/movement activities in Phys. Ed
We also had a great performance by Dallas Arcand on Thursday. On top of sharing his music and dancing, he shared some traditions and beliefs of indigenous people. It was very entertaining. Mrs. K has some photos on her weekly blog you might want to check out.

This week we will continue working on similar activities like above. In a week, we will be heading to the arena to do our first week of skating. It would be great to have some extra skaters or hands to ties skates. Please let me know if you are able to come during our times. Our class is 2B. Please also ensure that you complete the permission on Powerschool.

It's going to be a cold week. Please let me know if your child is going to be absent. Stay warm!

Merry Christmas!

We had a busy, fun, exciting last week of school in 2019. We wrote, solved problems, crafted, cooperated, read, played and so much more. The kids did an excellent job of listening and following routines during such an exciting time. They are awesome! I added a few pictures from our day today into the Dec photo folder. Thanks to all the families who sent in food for our brunch!

Over the holidays I will get more inputted into Powerschool. We will be skating in January and February. We skate Jan 20-23 and Feb 24-27.

I wish you all a wonderful Christmas season. I'll see you in the New Year!

Week Before Holidays

The kids are enjoying their jewel jar reward today. We have also been busy in our workshop completing our secret projects. On Friday we will be enjoying a Christmas brunch in the classroom and then the kids will be watching The Polar Express with the rest of the school in the gym in the afternoon. The kids can wear PJs and bring blankets or pillows that day.
Thanks in advance to the families who are contributing food to our Christmas celebration.

Dec 9-13

I hope you all enjoyed our Christmas concert last week. I thought the kids did a great job! Boy did they look cute all dressed up. There are a few pictures of them in the Dec folder.

We had a busy day today flying (pretending) to Meteghan. We explored things like clam digging, lobster fishing, whale watching and what the kids learn at school there. We also looked at some natural resources in that community and how it's different from Devon. We also talked a bit about it's history. Check out our lobster traps they made in the Dec folder.

Tomorrow during our first community afternoon,  they will get a chance to try some food, build a clay lighthouse and to make a fishing game. Thanks to everyone for making sure the fees are paid. It helps us buy materials for these special days.

Here are a few other things we've been working on:
  • math facts
  • numbers to 100
  • our weekly spelling activities
  • Christmas reading comprehension activities
  • Canada, it's provinces and territories
  • Christmas writing
Today we practiced our first lock down drill. We do this just to be prepared in case of an emergency. The kids were very calm and responsible and did a great job.

Next week is going to be an exciting week. Parents, not that we don't want you to come but please do not enter the classroom. We will be working on some special projects. We will be crafting up a storm! Please let me know if your child will be missing any days at school next week. This is for people who may be leaving on holidays early, not sickness.

The kids also filled their jewel jar again and voted on a movie and stuffie day. We will do this on Wednesday. The kids are welcome to bring an extra snack or drink to have during the movie.

On Friday we will celebrate by having a brunch in the classroom. I will make pancakes and will ask the December volunteers to fill in the rest. I will contact those people today. The kids can also wear pjs that day, Dec 20th.

That's all for now. Remember that tomorrow is Christmas Spirit day.

Our Week

We have been busy rehearsing for the Christmas concert that is happening on Tuesday, Dec 3 at 6:30. Please drop your child off at the NW door around 6:10 so we can get ourselves organized. Please let me know if your child will not be able to attend the concert. Our dress rehearsal will be at 1:10 that afternoon if you are not able to attend the evening performance. Please let me know if you have any questions. FYI: we will be standing on the west side of the stage for the concert.

When you come, you'll see that the kids have been busy working on art to decorate the gym. It looks wonderful! Here is the project we worked on. Check out the Nov photos for individual photos.

There are a couple more reminders for the week. Wednesday is early dismissal. Also, I will be away at PD on Thursday and Friday (Friday is a PD day, no school for the kids)this week. Mrs. Fleming will be in to teach the kids when I am away on Thursday. I will be learning all about Executive Functioning Skills from Peg Dawson. Library day is Thursday. If you haven't had a chance to pay the community days fee on Powerschool, please do so. Our first special day is coming up soon.

I hope you had a chance to check out some of the photos of our field trip to the Telus World of Science this past week. Thanks to all the parent volunteers who came! I thought the programs we did were great. There was a bit of disappointment as we were not allowed into the Marvel display as it was not included in our fee. I still thought it was a great day!

Here are a few things we will be spending our time on over the next few weeks:
  • data analysis and numbers to 100
  • many Christmas reading/writing activities
  • we will study our first community in Canada, Meteghan, Nova Scotia
  • magnets
  • Christmas art/craft projects
I will contact the families who signed up to bring food for our Christmas brunch next week. We will do this on the Friday before our Christmas break.

It's going to be a great few weeks of school! I'll see many of you on Tuesday!
